The family of a murdered Smyrna woman traveled 18 hours from England for a very sad occasion: the memorial service for 27-year-old Kayleigh Dupont.
Police say Dupont was murdered Jan. 16 by her fiance's brother, Justin Bennett, in her apartment. Bennett then shot and killed himself, police said.
Kathleen Donoghue, Dupont's mother, said she talked to her daughter just 20 minutes before she was murdered.
"They had a feeling that he might do something stupid. Not this," Donoghue said. "I just can't believe my Kayleigh is gone. It's just devastating."
Donoghue said she knew there had been trouble in the family. On the day after Christmas, Dupont argued with her future father-in law, Timothy Bennett, over a broken toy train.
Timothy Bennett admitted to Channel 4 that he struck Dupont the night of the argument but said she struck him first.
Dupont filed charges filed against Timothy Bennett - an act some think drove his son, Justin Bennett, over the edge.
"You don't kill somebody over something like that. I just don't get it. There was a bit of tension, but not enough to go and murder somebody. I've never heard anything like it," Donoghue said.
Dupont's fiance, Jason Bennett, is dealing with a double tragedy. He lost the woman he loved and his own brother. He's now a single dad to a 2-year-old boy who was in the home the night his mother was killed.
"He's such a lovely little boy. He doesn't have any idea what happened," said Dupont's brother, Gary Donoghue.
Gary Donoghue said he is grateful for everyone's support. He said more than 500 messages have been posted on his Facebook page and said his sister's coworkers at the Walmart in Murfreesboro have raised $3,500 to help pay her final expenses.
"So genuine, so nice, and the support has just been fantastic," he said.
The funeral for Dupont is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in Hohenwald.
Meanwhile, the criminal charge against Timothy Bennett for domestic assault is still pending. Smyrna's police chief said he's going ahead with the case.
