NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A woman who survived for nearly a month on a ventilator is expected to make a complete recovery now.

Mary Bryant was originally hospitalized with pneumonia, but when she was later found unconscious, doctors knew it was much worse.

"The level of the illness that she had was higher than the typical pneumonia that we generally see," said Dr. Christopher Thomas, at TriStar Centennial Medical Center.

Bryant had the H1N1 strain of influenza combined with pneumonia, and she was hospitalized for 34 days, with much of that time spent on a ventilator.

Her father says he wants to save other parents from this experience.

"For $20, get a flu shot," said Bryant's father, John Gross. "It's the cheapest $20 you'll ever spend."

Bryant is now sitting up and eating, and there was a time no one expected to see that.

She was transferred Thursday to an extended care facility, where she is expected to make a complete recovery.
