MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A Middle Tennessee State University student has died after being struck by a dump truck while attempting to cross an intersection near campus Friday morning.

Murfreesboro police said David R. Chitwood, 28, was attempting to cross Greenland Drive at Middle Tennessee Boulevard about 9 a.m. when he was hit by a dump truck that was attempting to make a right turn from Greenland Drive onto Middle Tennessee Boulevard.

The intersection is located at the northwest corner of campus.

Chitwood died from his injuries at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

A university spokesperson said Chitwood was a junior mass communication major from Murfreesboro.

In a statement, MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee said:

"It's a tragedy anytime MTSU loses a member of the university family, particularly when it involves one of our students. Our deepest sympathies are with the Chitwood family, who will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Counseling services will be available at MTSU for students or anyone who needs them.

Police said the truck was driven by Kevin Lee, 32, of Lebanon, and no charges have been filed.

Murfreesboro police and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are investigating.
