Extreme temperatures hard for allergy sufferers

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - People who suffer from allergies could be feeling miserable with the roller-coaster weather. Doctors say the extreme fluctuation in temperatures can be challenging for people who don't have allergies.

Doctors at the Vanderbilt Asthma, Sinus and Allergy Program say it's important that people who have year-round allergies continue to take their allergy medicine. They also say that even people who don't have allergies can develop a runny nose and congestion in the midst of rapidly changing weather.

Doctors advise using an over-the-counter saline nasal spray or nasal sinus rinse if you have a congested, runny or itchy nose. This will also help nasal tissues that are irritated by the cold, dry air. They also say it may be time to see a doctor if over-the-counter treatments don't work.
