Mt. Juliet police are investigating after an elderly couple was found dead inside a home Tuesday morning on the 1000 block of Weston Drive.
Retired nurse Betty Wilburn and her husband, Huburt Wilburn, were the residents of the home, and police said there had been no prior incidents at the address.
"Really nice folks. They're around about 80 years old," said neighbor Louis Barbeau.
Barbeau said he got a call Tuesday morning from the couple's son, concerned his parents weren't answering their phone. The two then walked in the home together and found the unthinkable.
"Makes you want to throw up. It's just a horrible thing," Barbeau said.
Officers say both of the deceased had wounds that appeared to have been caused by gunshots, but autopsies will be performed.
Police say they are not actively searching for suspects at this time, and there is no current danger to the public.
Barbeau said he spoke with Huburt Wilburn just Monday and said he believed the couple was struggling with health issues.
"Health problems and family issues just had him depressed and couldn't take it any more, I guess," Barbeau said.
Barbeau was doing his best to help, and he had volunteered to take the Wilburns to a doctor's appointment Tuesday afternoon.
"If you've got friends or neighbors that look like they need some help, try to help them. Try to provide some support for their personal and emotional needs. Pay attention to what's going on around you," Barbeau said.
Again, neighbors believe this was a murder-suicide, and police are not searching for any suspects, but an official cause of death will not be released until the autopsies are completed.
