Bulger's Beat: Goodwill greeter brightens days with smiles and soul

Posted: Updated:

Wayne Stevens came close to fame as a singer four decades ago in the Nashville soul band the Dynamic 5, but just because you're great doesn't mean you'll make it big time.

Today, while his stage may be small, his audience still loves him as he greets shoppers with a smile and sometimes a song at the Goodwill store in Madison.

"I like it when you smile, makes the sun shine that much brighter," Stevens said.

A store called Goodwill deserves a goodwill ambassador like Stevens, who get laughs and smiles every day.

"Hey, I'm just being me. I want you comfortable when you come through that store," he said.

The singing isn't something new. He made waves in the 1970s with the Dynamic 5. United Artists signed them up, but fame just never came.

Then, a few years ago, a massive stroke changed his life.

"I didn't think I was gonna make it," Stevens said. "I couldn't walk. I couldn't talk. I had to re-learn how to walk. I had to re-learn how to talk."

After years of therapy, he's now at work and getting smiles four days a week.

"Just because I had a stroke doesn't mean I can't talk to these people and get the best out of them," he said.

Stevens is at the store, at 2101 Gallatin Pike North, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Friday and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. He will take requests, but only if your choice in music has some soul.
