Vanderbilt fans share mixed feelings about Franklin's departure

Posted: Updated:

As Vanderbilt football players were welcomed back down the University's Star Walk, they carried heavy hearts after learning their beloved coach is leaving to become head coach at Penn State University.

"It was emotional for everybody," one football player said. "We all love coach and we know he loves us, and that's not going to change wherever he's at."

Hours later at the basketball game against the University of Kentucky, Franklin's departure was still the hot topic amongst the students.

"Everyone has their own personal interests, and he's done great things at Vanderbilt," says Vanderbilt senior Teddy Raskin. "I don't want to take that away from him, but I know that people that got to know him personally as I did, and many of my colleagues, know the sky is the limit for him. I think that he could've kept doing amazing things here. It is sad to see him go," he continued.

At 104.5 radio, the phones rang off the hooks. "You can't blame a hometown boy for wanting to go home," said one caller, "especially when he's pretty much been begging to put [people] in the seats and no one shows up."

Ultimately, the fans say no matter what is said or done, they are standing behind their team.

"No matter what, we're going to be here to support our guys," said a former Vanderbilt basketball player. "We look forward to great season next year."
