PHOENIX (CBS5) -

One person was killed, and another was in critical condition after at least 70 shots rang out in a gang-related gun battle in a Phoenix neighborhood Thursday, police said.

"A lot of people were put in jeopardy because of those shots that were fired," Phoenix Police Sgt. Crump said.

Anthony Hines, 27, died after he was taken by people from the scene to Maricopa Medical Center, Crump said.

The second victim, a 30-year-old man, was rushed into surgery and remained in the hospital Friday.

Neighbors and witnesses told officers that a pickup truck loaded with 12 people pulled up to the house in the 1700 block of East Chipman and then the people went inside, Crump said.

The shooting started after an argument and fight inside the home and spilled into the street, where more shots were fired, Crump said.

When officers arrived just before noon they found numerous shell casings in the street, Crump said. He said police had not determined how many people fired weapons before everyone fled the scene.

Personal vehicles arriving at a local hospital with some shooting victims matched the description of the vehicles provided by witnesses at the crime scene, Crump said.

People at the hospital and the shooting scene were detained, but no arrests had been made as of Friday morning.

"We have identified a number of the individuals involved," Crump said.

Crump said it appeared the gunfire was gang-related. The gang squad was on the scene.

He said witnesses claimed a third person might have been shot in a leg and hadn't yet sought medical treatment.
