PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police are searching for a gunman armed with an AK-47 rifle who robbed a Phoenix discount store Friday.

The gunman entered the Family Dollar store at 3555 W. Van Buren St. about 6:30 p.m. wearing what was described as a gray-hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The suspect pointed the weapon at the clerk and demanded money from the cash registers, said Phoenix Officer James Holmes.

After getting the cash, the suspect left the store and fled the area.

The suspect is described as Hispanic and appeared to be around 25 years old. He is 5'6" tall and weighs 170 pounds.

Officers ask for the public's help in identifying the suspect. People with information are urged to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

Holmes said there was an armed robbery at the Ozark Market at 3202 W. Buckeye Rd. about 7:30 p.m. on that same day by a suspect with a similar description.

Phoenix police detectives have not been able to determine if the two armed robberies are related in any way, Holmes said.
