A Tucson woman on vacation in northern Arizona is recovering after she was sexually assaulted in Oak Creek Canyon Wednesday, Coconino County sheriff's deputies said.
The 52-year-old woman said she was vacationing in Flagstaff. On her way home to Tucson, she was driving through Sedona and stopped on the side of South 89A close to the Call of the Canyon day use area to admire the view of a creek, deputies said.
She was approached from behind and physically assaulted, sheriff's investigators said. The suspect left on foot, possibly in a southerly direction.
Detectives are trying to determine whether the suspect was armed at the time of the assault.
The suspect is described as a white male in his mid to late 40s. He has medium-length dark hair, a scraggly dark beard and moustache. He was last seen wearing brown pants with side pockets, a dark sweatshirt and cowboy boots.
Anyone with information about the crime, who can help authorities identity the suspect are asked to call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523, toll free at 1-800-338-7888 or Silent Witness at 928-774-6111.
