TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Arizona State University has tapped a former National Football League executive to run its athletic department.

Ray Anderson emerged from a nationwide search to replace former athletic director Steve Patterson, who left ASU for a similar position at the University of Texas.

Anderson was the executive vice president of football operations for the NFL before leaving in December. Anderson has also worked for the Atlanta Falcons and owned his own sports agency.

On Wednesday, the Arizona Board of Regents plans to discuss the terms of Anderson's contract. He must be approved by the board.

"Mr. Anderson has an extensive and impressive background in athletics and law and has a reputation as a leader and a mentor," said Rick Myers, chairman of the Arizona Board of Regents.

"He is also hailed as a leader in diversity, having received awards for his commitment to workplace diversity and improving the quality of life for African Americans," Myers said.
