Save money on your utility bill with these home heating tips

Posted: Updated:

The next few days will be responsible for a big portion of your heating bill this month, but there are a few easy ways to save some money.

Piedmont Natural Gas suggests you set the thermostat a few degrees lower than usual this week. This will reduce the amount of time your heater must run to keep it at the preset temperature.

Offset the coolness inside your home by wearing warm layers and keeping a blanket nearby.

Next, change your furnace's air filter once a month, since dirty filters reduce efficiency.

And be sure to check around your exterior doors and windows for any drafts. Ideally, you'll want to use caulk or weather stripping to prevent heat from escaping. But, for now, rolling up a blanket or towel and placing it along the bottom of a drafty door will help.

As customers crank up the heat, it is driving up demand on electricity grids. The Tennessee Valley Authority said this arctic blast has been the coldest weather it's dealt with in 20 years.

TVA is operating under a special alert for the next few days, postponing any nonessential maintenance so there aren't any interruptions.

Demand for TVA electricity is estimated to reach nearly 32,000 megawatts Tuesday night, which would still be shy of the winter record of 32,500 megawatts set in January 2009.
