FAIRVIEW, TN (WSMV) -
A South Carolina man accused of killing his mother and stepfather was captured Friday morning in Middle Tennessee after escaping from a mental health facility in Columbia, SC.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol issued a "be on the lookout" alert for 39-year-old Jason Mark Carter at 6:30 a.m. Friday. South Carolina officials were able to ping Carter's cell phone, which is when they let local law enforcement know that he could be near Exit 182 on Interstate 40.
A Tennessee state trooper then saw Carter's car at the Fairview Inn on Highway 96.
"He was identified by the clerk as the individual we were looking for, and after that point, we put together a team of local troopers here and a couple special ops troopers, with the assistance of the Fairview police department. We went in and took him into custody without any further incident," said THP Sgt. J.D. Blackwell. "He was more than surprised by some troopers coming in and taking him into custody."
Authorities say Carter checked in to the hotel at 4:30 a.m. Friday and was on his way to California, where he has family.
"According to the clerk this morning, he was tired and was planning on sleeping until 11am. That is what he told her," Blackwell said.
Carter is being held at the Williamson County Jail.
According to WHNS-TV, the South Carolina Department of Mental Health said Carter left without permission from a work program at the mental health facility Thursday morning.
The department of mental health is conducting an internal review is underway to determine how Carter was able to leave the property.
Police say Carter may have stolen a van from the Craft Farrow State Hospital in SC and later purchased a Chevrolet Lumina.
Carter is accused of killing his mother and stepfather in 2006. Prosecutors say he wrapped their bodies in plastic bags and dumped them in a basement. He was committed to the facility after he was found incompetent to stand trial.
