Tips to prevent kitchen fires

Posted: Updated:

House fires, especially ones that start in the kitchen, are more likely to happen during the holidays.

The state fire marshal is urging people to stay alert to keep fires from starting.

Fire experts said:

  • Don't use the stove if you're sleepy or have been drinking alcohol.
  • Make sure you keep anything flammable, like oven mitts, packaging or curtains, away from the stove.
  • Stay in the kitchen if you're frying, grilling or broiling food so you can keep an eye on it.
  • If a grease fire does flare up, slide a lid over the pan and turn off the stove.
  • If food catches fire in the oven, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
