Middle Tennessee braces for severe storms

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Severe storms are expected Saturday evening and overnight throughout Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky.

The main threat will be straight-line damaging thunderstorm winds, but isolated tornadoes (rare in December) are also expected.

The main line of storms may enter Middle Tennessee from the west as early as 8 or 9 p.m. Saturday evening and reach Nashville as early as 12 Midnight, Murfreesboro around 2:00 a.m. and Cookeville at 3:30 a.m. (Of course, these times are estimates. Some computer models are suggesting the line may slow down and arrive two to three hours later than the times listed above.)

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the western half of Middle Tennessee, including Davidson County, until midnight.

It's important to note that some rotating cells may pop-up this evening, well in advance of the main line mentioned above. This type of pop-up cell has a reputation for creating damaging storms, so that will be our main concern during the afternoon and early evening.

Also, a Wind Advisory is issued for Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky, in effect from 10:00 a.m. Saturday through 4:00 a.m. Sunday. During this time, sustained winds will race in from the south at 20-30 mph. Wind gusts will reach 40-50 mph.

These winds will likely bring down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.

The elevated winds will also make driving more difficult, especially when traveling on routes eastward and westward.

Use caution while driving high profile vehicles.

The 4WARN weather team will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates throughout the day.
