Dad of slashing victim: 'He's gonna pull through just fine'

MOBILE, AL (WLOX) -

"He's gonna pull through just fine." The father of the 8-year-old boy whose throat was slashed in an attack offered those positive words of his son's condition with WLOX News Friday.

The boy and his 5-year-old brother were kidnapped Wednesday from a home in Pearl River County and taken to a trailer in Hancock County where, authorities say, both were sexually assaulted and the older boy's throat was slashed.

WLOX News is not identifying the family due to the nature of the assault. The boys' father spoke with WLOX News by phone from the hospital in Mobile where the 8-year-old is recovering.

"He's going through a little much right now. He has tubes in him," the father said. Doctors are keeping the child sedated, but his father said "he wakes up some and recognizes we're here."

You could hear the exhaustion in the father's voice as he talked about the ordeal his boys endured. The father, his fiancee, and other family members are staying by the boy's side around the clock.

"He's looking fine. He's just a real trooper," the father said.

He said his 5-year-old son is having to adjust to everything going on, not really understanding.

Friends in Pearl River County have organized a candlelight vigil Saturday to pray for the boys and support the family. Many plan to bring Christmas presents for the children. The event will take place at Poplarville City Park at 7 p.m.

"I thank everybody for everything they're doing. It's just been a real blessing," the father told WLOX News.
