Nominate your favorites from the year in pop culture or find a few new favorites in this week's collection.
(RNN) – Pop culture in 2013 was pretty wild, wasn't it?
With 2013 ending in just a few weeks, we want to honor the many things that caught our attention and dominated our water cooler conversations; but what were the moments, lyrics, movie lines and sports memories that stuck with you this year?
As your guide through pop culture, I am asking you to nominate your top pop culture moments of 2013 for the big pop culture extravaganza that will be like Wrestlemania and the Super Bowl all rolled up into a giant word pie.
Music, movies, television, celebrity news, video games, smartphone apps, technology – 2013 was a big year for it all. What was your favorite? Just email me or tweet me at @TanitaG_RNN and let's get it rolling.
First, what's the likelihood that the beautiful Kate Upton really eats Hot Pockets? Second, is it likely that Upton would pass out eating said Hot Packet and dream about Snoop Dogg/Lion rapping to a Biz Markie sample (of a sample) about Hot Pockets, while she lip-syncs to Markie's voice. Third, Bow Wow still raps? Fourth, why are Larry King and Snoop Dogg/Lion even friends? Isn't this the strangest friendship in 2013, or can we give that to Kim Jong Un and Dennis Rodman?
The only thing that's likely is Snoop Dogg/Lion rapping about "baking." Whether his rhymes are about baking crusts or something else can be left up to your imaginations. Just watch in disbelief - I did.
Sports: Don't be a lazy player on Southern Illinois' basketball team, or coach will chew you out
College basketball players - if you never want to be publicly embarrassed by your coach, you better show some hustle. The very PG rant by Barry Hinson, the coach of the Southern Illinois men's basketball team, will now live in Sportscenter lore.
Going down as probably the best coaching rant of 2013, Hinson let loose on his players Tuesday night during a post-game press conference following his team's 73-65 loss to Murray State. Hinson called his players "momma's boys," said his wife commits to the schemes better than they do and basically called them a sorry lot of student-athletes.
"My wife - my wife - can score more than two buckets on 11 shots because I know my wife will at least shot fake one time. But those guys aren't listening. They're un-coachable right now,'' Hinson said during the press conference.
Despite the outburst, Hinson apologized for calling players by name, but not for his honesty. Southern Illinois athletic director Mario Moccia backs the coach, but called his coach's rant a "Yosemite Sam bombastic outburst," according to ESPN. It appears Hinson has studied the Mike Singletary-style of coaching.
Dancing to Bob Marley is not going to make your scandal go away, so please stop making yourself appear to be normal or approachable. Nothing is worse than a government official dancing, but a crack-smoking mayor dancing to reggae music? It's as inappropriate as it is hilarious and I hope Bobby Moynihan does this on Saturday Night Live this week.
Music: Re-live the '90s on your New Year's Eve party playlist
It's always fun to re-live the music the 1990s. Here's a little playlist that's guaranteed to remind you making a mix-tape for your friend or significant other. If you add any of these to your holiday party playlists, you're welcome in advance for making your party pop off like the Best Buy commercial.
Alice in Chains, Man in The Box – I love this song because if you sing it out loud, by yourself in an empty room, it's very liberating. It's even better sung with friends. It's like soul grunge.
Notorious B.I.G., One More Chance- Any Notorious B.I.G. could have been picked for this list, but this R&B-infused jam is guaranteed to set off any New Year's Eve party.
Beck, Loser – Alt rock and Spanish lyrics – yes, please!
Outcast, ATLiens – Again, guaranteed to make your party pop off.
Amber, Sexual(Li Da Di) – Yeah, it's time to go for that guy that's been checking you out with this song, ladies.
Aqua, Barbie Girl– If you pretend you don't know the lyrics to this song, you are going into 2014 a liar. So just sing and have a good time, you know you love this song.
Garth Brooks, Friends in Low Places – Because we all have them, and it's just fun to sing with your friends.
Busta Rhymes, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See(WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT) – When I was a too young to go to clubs, I always wanted to walk into a club with this as my background music. Now, this is what I would turn on at the apex of a house party.
TLC, Diggin' On You – Much like No. 2, I could have picked any TLC song, but this one is about approaching on that person checking you out or the object of your affections.
Foo Fighters, Everlong –Throwing a rock-themed NYE party? You have to play this Foo Fighters classic.
Movies: This just in – people love Hobbits
This is breaking news - people love anything to do with hobbits. J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy stories and Peter Jackson's big screen visions of mythical creatures making legendary journeys across strange and treacherous kingdoms and landscapes can capture us all.
All of those things show in the box office numbers for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug topped the box office last weekend, shoving Disney's animated hit Frozen to the No. 2 spot. Meanwhile, the sequels to The Hunger Games and Thor remain to hold steady in the Top 5.
Here's last weekend's Top 5, according to Box Office Mojo (listed next to previous week's ranking and weekend gross):
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (NR) $73,645,197
Frozen (1) $22,568,138
Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas (NR) $16,007,634
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2) $13,671,666
Thor: The Dark World (4) $2,820,055
In theaters: Dec. 20
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues- In the highly-promoted film to the 2004 comedy, newscaster Ron Burgundy takes the 1980s by storm and is accompanied by his trusted and hilariously terrible news team to an upstart 24-hour news channel. The sequel is as celebrity-filled as the original and stars Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner, Christina Applegate, Meagan Good, James Marsden, Kristen Wiig, Sasha Baron Cohen, Tina Fey, Kirsten Dunst, Fred Willard, Harrison Ford, Kanye West – great hammer of Thor, I just feel like I am vomiting celebrity names at this point.
American Hustle - A pair of con artists are turned into informants by a hard-partying FBI agent to turn on their fellow cronies and criminals including the seedy mayor of a New Jersey city and his mafia friends. The movie stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper (with a very impressive perm) Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Jennifer Lawrence, and comedian Louis C.K.
Saving Mr. Banks – Theme park and entertainment giant Walt Disney tries and succeeds in getting author P.L. Travers to allow him to turn her classic novel Mary Poppins into a film. The film stars Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Paul Giamatti, B.J. Novak, Bradley Whitford and Jason Schwartzman.
