Thieves take 32 propane tanks from Cheatham market

Posted: Updated:

What would anyone do with $2,000 worth of propane tanks? That's what investigators are wondering after 32 tanks were stolen from a gas station in Cheatham County.

A man was caught on video using some sort of tool to break in and load up tank after 38-pound tank, eight of them total, into the back of his minivan.

"They knew what they were there to get," said Detective Shannon Hefflin with the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office.

The next night, the man came back wearing the same clothes.

Store employees had just replaced the tanks and locks, but he used the same cutting instrument to get to the tanks.

"That's the first time I've seen that in my 18-year career in law enforcement," Hefflin said.

This time, the man showed up with help who turned out to be not so helpful. In the video, the first thing his partner does is hit his head on the back of the van.

Even investigators can't help but watch and giggle.

"That is very comical," Hefflin said.

The crooks got away with 32 tanks, and investigators have no clue why they want them.

"No other agencies right now are seeing this type of theft," Hefflin said.

It happened twice, so deputies say it will probably happen again.

"They're definitely overconfident that they're not going to get caught," Hefflin said.

Deputies are determined to catch them.

"We're hoping that there's somebody that will view this tape in the public and will recognize the two suspects and give us a call at the sheriff's department," Hefflin said.

The two men left the store at 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, and when they did, investigators say they were speeding and cut somebody off on Highway 41A and headed toward Montgomery County.

The Cheatham County Sheriff's Office is asking those with any information in this case to give them a call.
