TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Pima County Superior Court grand jury indictment for the Tucson couple accused of imprisoning three girls shows the defendants facing very serious charges.

According to the court document, Fernando and Sophia Richter are charged with three counts of kidnapping on or about the dates between Sept. 1, 2013 and Nov. 26, 2013.

Additionally, the Richters are charged with three counts of child abuse by intentionally putting the girls' health in danger. Fernando Richter has also been charged with three counts of aggravated assault including using a deadly weapon. Authorities say Fernando Richter attempted to assault two of the girls with a knife the morning they escaped and ran to a neighbor's house for help.

The Richters are scheduled for arraignment in Pima County Superior Court Friday.

According to the Pima County Attorney's Office, the potential sentencing ranges are as follows:

Fernando Richter

  • Count One and Two:  Kidnapping, Class 2 felony, Alleged as a Dangerous Crime against Children (DCAC) 10-17-24, requires mandatory flat prison time for each count, consecutive to each other and any other sentence imposed
  • Count Three: Kidnapping, Class 2 felony, 3-4-5-10-12.5 (probation available)
  • Count Four and Five:  Aggravated Assault Dangerous Weapon/Dangerous Instrument, Class 2 felony, DCAC 10-17-24, mandatory flat prison time for each count, consecutive to each other and any other sentence imposed
  • Count Six:  Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Class 5 felony, .5-.75-1.5-2-2.5 (probation available)
  • Counts Seven, Eight, and Nine:  Child Abuse, Class 4 felony, 1-1.5-2.5-3-3.75 (probation available) 

Sophia Richter

  • Counts One and Two:  Kidnapping, Class 2 felony, DCAC 10-17-24, requires mandatory flat prison time for each count, consecutive to each other and any other sentence imposed
  • Count Three: Kidnapping, Class 2 felony, 3-4-5-10-12.5 (probation available)
  • Counts Four, Five, and Six:  Child Abuse, Class 4 felony, 1-1.5-2.5-3-3.75 (probation available)
