NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

There's sad new to pass along about a cuddly Nashville celebrity cat. Buddha, the 31-pound cat that became a media sensation earlier this year in his quest to lose weight, has died.

A volunteer with the Cat Shoppe and Dog Store and Cat Shoppe Rescue had found Buddha at Metro Animal Control after his previous owner surrendered him after a death in the family.

Volunteers put Buddha on a weight-loss regimen that included walks on an underwater treadmill.

Buddha got down to 24 pounds - close to his 20-pound goal, but he couldn't keep up his exercise because of a congenital heart defect.

He died Thursday night.

A celebration of life is planned for Dec. 14 at Cafe Monell's, located at 2826 Bransford Ave., from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
