Woodbury recovering from massive downtown fire

Posted: Updated:

It's been a little more than a month since a massive fire in downtown Woodbury wiped out four businesses. The fire was a devastating blow to the community, which had been experiencing a bit of a renaissance thanks to its antique stores and quirky shops.

Now, the clean-up and recovery are well underway.

"Its part of life. Life goes on," said fire victim Sharon Odom.

While waiting for the fire investigation to wrap up, Odom has been volunteering at a local thrift shop.

"Clothes are a passion for me. I'm mainly a shoe hound. I love shoes," she said.

Her building was one of two which burned down Nov. 1. The building originally housed her own clothing consignment business, and she was renting space to a local gold buyer when the fire started.

"It was sickening. It was shocking. Just think of the words and it was it," Odom said.

Bad wiring in the business next to Odom's has been determined to have caused the fire.

Odom says insurance wouldn't cover the cost to start over, and she was worried it would be difficult to sell, but things are looking up.

Just four days after the fire, Odom says she got a phone call from someone wanting to buy the property, and she says she's received even more calls since then.

The Fouston family, who owns the building next to Odom's, told the city it has plans to remodel and reopen.

"We see a light at the end of the tunnel. We see by spring these buildings back in business," said Mayor Harold Patrick.

Ladder trucks from neighboring cities probably helped save the remaining buildings. Now, Woodbury is focused on getting one of its own.

"We're working to try to get funding, because even a used fire truck is a couple thousand dollars," Patrick said.

And while Odom says losing her building has been hard, she believes good things are to come.
