NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The first of two winter storms has made its way out of Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky, and a winter weather advisory is in effect for many counties as the second round approaches for late Saturday.
A second round of wintry precipitation is anticipated across the region Saturday evening into early Sunday morning. Temperatures ahead of this storm will be colder than Friday's storm, so the potential exists for more wide-spread icy conditions, especially in the counties that experienced freezing rain and sleet Friday.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday for: Benton, Cannon, Carroll, Cheatham, Clay, Davidson, Dekalb, Dickson, Fentress, Henderson, Henry, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Jackson, Lewis, Macon, Maury, Montgomery, Overton, Perry, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, White, Williamson and Wilson counties. The advisory for Decatur, Hardin and Henderson counties remains in effect from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.
The NWS says a winter weather advisory means that periods of sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties and that travelers should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities. Ice buildup on elevated roadways, trees and power lines is likely.
The wintry weather is expected to start coming in around 9 p.m. Saturday, hitting the south first and spreading northward. According to the NWS, light ice accumulations are expected to begin along and south of the Interstate 40 corridor by midnight and then spread across northern Middle Tennessee counties after midnight.
