LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -

The trial has started for the former Lorain County Sheriff's Correction Officer accused of killing his wife.

William Dembie waived the jury trial, so it is now a bench trial. Opening arguments were heard on Tuesday morning, and the prosecution started calling witnesses by early afternoon.

Dembie allegedly confessed to killing his wife, Holly, in August of 2011. Police say he stabbed her to death, nearly decapitating her, in a fit of passion.

Dembie called 911 and told dispatchers he had beheaded her. When deputies responded, Holly's body was found behind the house, but she was not beheaded.

The couple has a young son, who was not home at the time of the murder.
