Crime Stoppers: Conversation with strangers ends in theft

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Have a look at this week's Crime Stoppers case, help ID these folks, and we can get two scam artists off the streets. "The victim in this case was in Chick-fil-A," said Chattanooga Police Sgt. Craig Joel. "She was approached by a male and female who struck up a conversation with her. It seemed innocent enough."

But the season of giving also ushers in a season of taking. "After the conversation ended," Sgt. Joel continued, "she noticed her purse felt a little lighter. She looked around and actually realized her wallet had been taken out of her purse by one while the other distracted her."

Obviously not their first time running this crime.   The victim acted quickly, but so did the duo.  "She did the right thing. She immediately called her bank to have those cards canceled," Joel explained. "And as she made the call, she discovered there was $3,100 or so being transacted from her card, from the store right behind her at Target."

That store is just across the parking lot and it is from there that we get the pictures of our suspects.  The victim tried to intercept them, but they had quickly made their purchases and split the scene. However, we can provide a good look at one of them. "The male in this case actually looked right up into the camera," said Joel, which was very convenient for us."

And it will be super convenient for you, if you recognize them. Remember, reward cash is on the table. The pictures clearly show their builds, and that the male is sporting facial hair.  If they look familiar, call Crime Stoppers. End their scam so they cannot claim another victim this holiday season.

If you recognize one or both of our suspects, we need your help. Call Crime Stoppers: 698-3333.

Up to a thousand dollars is up for grabs. Remember, an officer may answer the phone, but no one will ever ask for your identity.
