CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Chattanooga fire investigators are trying to determine how a fire got started at a Brainerd gas station. It happened shortly after 5:00p.m. Monday at the Murphy USA gas station at 310 Greenway View Drive.

A fire official says a 32-year-old man was pumping gas into his vehicle when a fire erupted, catching his pants on fire, as well as part of the vehicle.  Eyewitnesses said the man initially panicked and ran. A couple of people grabbed portable fire extinguishers and extinguished the fire on the man and his vehicle. The fire was completely out when firefighters arrived on the scene.

The victim suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns, mostly to his legs.  He was taken to Erlanger for treatment.  His injuries do appear to be non-life-threatening.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
