Take the Pac-12, for example. It almost didn't matter that Stanford defeated Oregon when the Cardinals lost to USC last week. But Oregon lost big to Arizona on Saturday (more on that later), and pushed itself out of the Cardinals' way in the Pac-12 North.
Clemson may be out of the ACC championship game, but they are slowly creeping back up the AP Top 10. Ohio State is undefeated, waiting for someone to fall or move up with the help of computers. Everyone else has to play conference championships to seal their fates.
Many of these teams have seen this road before. Many will have the door held wide open for them or shut in their faces.
Week 13 winners
Stanford – Stanford owes Arizona a really nice Thanksgiving dinner.
The Cardinals (9-2, 7-2 Pac-12) will return to the Pac-12 championship with their victory against the pitiful California Golden Bears (1-11, 0-9 Pac-12) 63-13 and an Oregon loss to Arizona.
Stanford's wide receiver Ty Montgomery had a great day – five total touchdowns (one rushing, four receiving) - was a season best for him. His big numbers were part of 603 yards of total offense for the Cardinals. NEXT UP: vs. Notre Dame on Nov. 30.
Clemson – Look at Clemson, making its silent prowl back into the Top 10.
Clemson's Senior Day was good to quarterback Tajh Boyd. In his final home game, Boyd went 21-of-28 with 288 passing yards and five touchdowns, including the 100th of his career, in a 52-6 win against The Citadel. Clemson also scored on five of its first six possessions.
The No. 7-ranked Tigers (10-1, 7-1 ACC) are slowly creeping back into the BCS picture. But first, they will try to defeat in-state rival South Carolina. They have lost the last four games against the Gamecocks. NEXT UP: at South Carolina on Nov. 30.
Other Week 13 winners: No. 2 Florida State soundly defeated Idaho 80-14; Indiana lost to No. 3 Ohio State 42-14; No. 10 Oklahoma State beat No. 4 Baylor 49-17; Cal was beaten by No. 9 Stanford 63-13; No. 13 Michigan State defeated Northwestern 30-6; No. 14 UCLA lost to No. 17 Arizona State 38-33; No. 15 Fresno State beat New Mexico 69-28; No. 17 Northern Illinois won against Toledo 35-17; Rutgers lost to No. 18 Central Florida 41-17; No. 25 Minnesota lost to No. 19 Wisconsin 20-7; No. 20 Oklahoma beat Kansas State 41-31; Memphis lost to No. 21 Louisville 24-17; No. 23 USC beat Colorado 47-29.
Week 13 losers
Oregon – Despite having more than 500 yards of total offense, the Oregon Ducks (9-2, 6-2 Pac-12) were outplayed by the Arizona Wildcats (7-4, 4-4 Pac-12). The big turnovers, including two turnovers by once-Heisman hopeful Marcus Mariota, held the Ducks back in a big way.
The Ducks, after their season started so strongly, lost to the Wildcats 42-16 in the weekend's biggest upset. The loss also keeps them out of the Pac-12 Championship and bursts their BCS bubble. And hey, Wildcats head coach, Rich Rodriguez, he looks like a pretty good one. Do you think he has a chance at a bigger program? NEXT UP: vs. Oregon State on Nov. 29.
Baylor – The Bears (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) and their outside national championship hopes are done.
In a primetime loss to No. 10 Oklahoma State (10-1, 7-1 Big 12), Baylor's powerful offense was stifled. They scored their lowest point total of the year – 17 points – and knocked them down them to second place in the Big 12 standings.
The Cowboys even tested Baylor's solid defense, racking up 594 yards in total offense, including OSU's quarterback Clint Chelf's career-high 370 passing yards. Meanwhile, Baylor's QB Bryce Petty's dark horse Heisman hopes may be strained. NEXT UP: at TCU on Nov. 30.
Other Week 13 losers: No. 25 Minnesota lost to No. 19 Wisconsin 20-7; No. 14 UCLA lost to No. 17 Arizona State 38-33.
Week 14 Game of the Week: No. 3 Ohio State @ Michigan, 12 p.m. ET Saturday – This is either still the best rivalry in college football or the most over-hyped rivalry game in all of sports. Either way, the Wolverines (7-4) would love to knock undefeated Ohio State off its high horse.
Let's talk rivalry weekend, shall we: Thanksgiving weekend usually means the end of the regular season for most of the teams in FBS. It also means that many of these teams will be playing their in-state or storied rivals in games that interrupt our turkey sandwich naps.
