Band of the Week: Tyner Pride

Posted: Updated:

The Tyner Pride Marching Band visited Channel 3 the first year we took on Band of the Week performances as part of Friday Night Football. That involved a late-night, post-game show in our parking lot. We were more than happy to go to them this year for a return performance!

Director Elias Smith tells me his group is at 77 members and really growing. They have an awesome sound in the stands and on the field. In their first competition this season, the Tyner Pride earned straight Superiors. For those not versed in the band lingo, that is the highest rank you can earn in five straight categories. Way to go Tyner!

Mr. Smith says the kids are doing a wonderful job and performed at all home and away games this season. Their first halftime show feature some 'old-school' R&B with all tunes from New Edition! They added newer pieces as the season went on, including charts by Justin Timberlake and Janelle Monáe. For us they play, sing, AND dance Rihanna's Nobody's Business.

Mr. Smith says the group is raising money for new instruments and would love the community's help. Some of the older horns are falling apart! If you can support the Tyner Pride in any way, contact Director Elias Smith at Tyner Academy.

Congratulations on a great marching season, Tyner Pride marching band, and thanks for being our Band of the Week!
