A man was stabbed to death during a fight in Madison Wednesday night, and the man who police say stabbed him claims it was in self-defense.

The incident happened in a homeless camp behind the Robinson Flea Market on the 12000 block of Gallatin Road in Madison.

Klayton Eammelli, 58, told Channel 4 he was lying in his tent when he heard someone going through the woods. Eammelli said he looked out and saw another man, who told him, "I'm going to kill you."

That's when Eammelli says he stabbed the man, later identified as 50-year-old Martin McDonald, with a homemade spear.

Police say Eammelli told them McDonald tried to carry off a piece of his plywood.

According to police, McDonald was stabbed three times. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died Thursday morning.

Eammelli called 911 at 11:45 p.m. to report the stabbing.

He was taken into custody for questioning but was released Thursday morning.

Police say Eammelli's claim of self-defense is under investigation.
