How to keep your luggage safe at the airport during the holiday season

Posted: Updated:

Thanksgiving is only two weeks away, and many of you will be traveling to see loved ones, but police say the holiday season is when thieves also head to the airport.

Just last week, Channel 4 reported a woman was arrested at the Nashville airport after police say she swiped a bag that didn't belong to her.

Authorities say this is not unusual during the holidays. Crooks know many of you have gifts and valuables in your luggage, and it's important to be on the lookout.

Here are some simple steps police say will help prevent your luggage from being stolen:

  1. Never put valuables in your luggage. That includes things like jewelry, iPods, anything electronic. Those easy-to-pocket items can be most at risk.
  2. Don't rely on luggage locks. They are flimsy and can easily break.
  3. Try to get to baggage claim right away. The longer your luggage goes around without you grabbing it, the more opportunity a thief has to get it before you do.
  4. Report stolen bags right away. If your luggage is stolen, minutes matter, and the thief could still be in the airport.
  5. Have an identifiable item on your luggage. It makes your bag stand out, and police say crooks don't want to waste time trying to get it off your luggage.

Here in Nashville, the airport is doing its part to help prevent thefts. A spokeswoman for the airport says they are increasing patrols with plain-clothed officers in the baggage claim area and always have cameras focused on the area.
