Interstate 24 to close briefly Sunday

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

The Tennessee Valley Authority will move a large, 500,000-pound power transformer to Raccoon Mountain that will require a brief closing on Interstate 24 Sunday.

Weather permitting, the transport will leave the railroad facility on Wauhatchi Pike in Chattanooga at 7:30 a.m. and travel along Cummings Highway (U.S. Highway 41/64/72) and Raccoon Mountain Road to the plant site.

Because the transporter is too large to go under the interstate overpass, I-24 will be closed at exit 174 for about 10 minutes to allow for the equipment to travel up the on-ramp, across the highway median and then back down the off-ramp.

The interstate crossing will take place about 8:30 a.m.

Local law enforcement agencies and the Tennessee Department of Transportation assist the escort and temporary interstate closure.

Motorists traveling these routes may experience delays and should use caution.
