Woman, 77, makes hundreds of Christmas presents for poor children

LAFAYETTE, GA (WRCB) -

A 77-year-old Lafayette woman is making sure hundreds of kids in need have a gift to open this Christmas.

But Evelyn Jackson isn't collecting money or stopping by shopping malls. She's doing presents the old-fashioned way -- making them all by hand.

"I believe I could make production on it, they're so easily made," she said.

Evelyn, an avid sewer, has stitched more than 350 dresses for young girls in poor countries. She said she's been sewing clothes for herself and her family since she was young, and it only made sense to use her skill to help others.

"I hope they love [the dresses]," Evelyn said. "I believe they will, because most all of [the girls] have never had a dress."

It's all a part of Operation Christmas Child, a nationwide project where children in poor countries are sent items often taken for granted -- like simple toys and even bars of soap.

Evelyn belongs to Catlett Community Church in Lafayette. This year, the 30-person congregation will be sending gifts to more than 1,100 children in third-world countries.

"You put your heart into it, and you're going to get a lot more than what you ever dreamed to imagine," said Tom Long, pastor at Catlett Community Church.

He said seeing the congregation work together teaches a valuable lesson. But for Evelyn, all the work is no big deal. It takes her just 15 minutes to make a dress from start to finish.

"It's just a piece of cake," she said.

A few other church members have pitched in on making the dresses. It took about five people combined to make nearly 150 dresses, but Evelyn made 350 dresses on her own.

"It makes me feel great. I'm so happy I could do it."
