Georgia names "Reward" and "Alert" schools

The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) today released the list of 2013 Reward and Alert Schools as part of the state's waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Definitions for both categories can be found below. The documents listing schools in each category are attached.

Reward School Definition:

A "Highest-Performing School" is a Title I school among the 5% of Title I schools in the State that has the highest absolute performance over three years for the "all students" group on the statewide assessments.  A school may not be classified as a Highest-Performing School if it has been identified as a Priority, Focus, or Alert School.

A "High-Progress School" is a Title I school among the 10% of Title I schools in the State that is making the most progress in improving the performance of the "all students" group over three years on the statewide assessments.  A school may not be classified as a High-Progress School if it has been identified as a Priority, Focus, or Alert School.

Alert Schools Definition - Title I and Non-Title I Schools

Definition:

• 3 ways to be identified:

  • Graduation Alert
  • Subgroup Alert
  • Subject Alert

Graduation Alert: graduation rate is below 3 standard deviations from the mean of the state's subgroups' graduation rate

  • Based on 9 ESEA subgroups

Subgroup Alert: achievement rate is below 3 standard deviations from the mean of the state's subgroups' meets and exceeds rate

  • Based on 9 ESEA subgroups

Subject Alert: subject achievement is below 3 standard deviations from the mean of the state's meets and exceeds rate for each subject.

In the Northwest Georgia area, four schools have been named "highest performance" schools.  They are: Trion Elementary, Brookwood Elementary in Dalton, Chickamauga Elementary, and Chattanooga Valley Middle.

Five schools have been named "highest progress" schools.  They are Summerville Middle in Chattooga County, Murray County High, Eastbrook Middle in Whitfield County, North Whitfield Middle and Calhoun High.

Three schools are named in the "subgroup" alert category.  They are Cedar Ridge Elementary in Whitfield County, Massey Elementary in Chattooga County and Davis Elementary in Dade County.

Two schools are listed in the "graduation rate alert" category.  They are Mountain Creek Academy in Murray County and Crossroads Alternative in Chattooga County.
