Metro police have identified the woman who died after driving the wrong way on Interstate 40 early Tuesday in west Nashville and crashing into another vehicle.
Christie Lynn Martin, 35, was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes when her 2008 Kia sedan collided head-on with a westbound Toyota Sienna minivan near Charlotte Pike about 2:30 a.m.
Martin, who recently moved to Nashville, according to family members in Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the minivan, James Deng, 50, of Nashville, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.
Officials say they do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. It's believed the woman did not know the area and accidentally got on the freeway incorrectly from either Charlotte Pike or Old Hickory Boulevard.
"For someone who's not familiar, it's kinda a confusing little intersection. You got that one turn to get on to go westbound, and if you catch that wrong lane,. the next thing you know you're coming up on the interstate going the wrong way - going eastbound in a westbound lane," said Metro Police Sgt. Bob Sheffield.
Officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation say the side-by-side ramps at Charlotte Pike were part of a 2008 inventory of interchanges to look at safety.
TDOT officials point out there are three signs on the exit ramping reading 'Do Not Enter' and 'Wrong Way,' in addition to arrows painted on the pavement that point drivers in the right direction.
Those arrows include reflectors that are made more visible by headlights at night.
