Local businesses aren't worried about recent robberies

Posted: Updated:

A pawn shop robbery Wednesday morning shares strikingly similar details to an incident exactly one week prior.

Now, Chattanooga police are trying to determine if the two robberies, in which the victims were maced, are in any way connected.

On Lee Highway, Wednesday morning, a 77-year-old victim tells police he was approached by two black men on his way into work.
He says the men maced him, and then took off with a money bag containing about $3,000.

Detectives were able to identify and arrest one of the suspects, 33-year old Lequan Bennett for his role in the robbery.

A similar robbery occurred last week outside Regions Bank on Ringgold Road.

The victim in that case was also attacked with pepper spray as he walked into the bank.

Police have not said if the two are related.

We spoke to several businesses in the area and the mindset for most of them was the same, they're not worried.

Branch Manager for Labor Smart, JR Deputy says it doesn't make them nervous, but rather more aware of what is going on around their stores and in their parking lots.

He says he has close relationships with all of the store employees in the strip mall, which is located next to the bank.

He says they all keep an eye out for each other and have a good idea who comes and goes.

"If we see any suspicious activity, we don't have a problem getting in touch with one another and saying hey is there a cause or a concern here?"

Chattanooga Police Department told Channel 3 that if you are taking deposits from your business to the bank to be cautious and mindful of your surroundings.

They also said having a buddy system is never a bad idea.
