CHATTANOOGA (Baylor) -- The TSSAA has awarded Baylor the 2012-2013 Blue Cross Championship Series Trophy, given to the school with the most outstanding athletic program in the state.
Grouped according to TSSAA competitive divisions and classes, schools earn points based on quarterfinal, semifinal, final round, and championship appearances with points increasing at each level of competition. Total points are divided by the number of sports offered to create an average point total. Only schools that have no reported incidents of unsportsmanlike behavior during the school year are eligible. The winning schools receive a $2,500 cash donation.
Receiving the trophy on behalf of the school, Baylor Athletic Director Thad Lepcio said it is a wonderful accomplishment for Baylor's student-athletes, coaches, and community as a whole. "I am thankful every day for the opportunity to work with students and coaches who achieve great success in the classroom and on the athletic fields. I'd also like to thank Blue Cross Blue Shield and the TSSAA for creating this award to recognize programs that have succeeded across the board while maintaining the highest levels of sportsmanlike behavior."
Baylor won five TSSAA state championships in 2012-13, taking titles in girls' and boys' golf, girls' cross country, girls' tennis, and softball. In non-TSSAA sports, Baylor added state crowns in swimming – girls, boys, and combined – and fencing.
