Prep playoff schedule for Friday, Nov. 22nd

Posted: Updated:

Fourteen area teams remain alive in the hunt for a state championship entering Week 13 of Friday Night Football on November 22.

Seven local programs have advanced to the state quarterfinals in the TSSAA postseason, including two of the three teams who shared the District 5-AAA regular season championship.

Cleveland will return to East Hamilton in the Class 5A quarterfinals for the Friday Night Football Game of the Week. The Hurricanes, who advanced by edging rival Ooltewah 26-19 in round two, handed the Blue Raiders their only district loss in a 21-20 decision on Hurricane Hill last month.

Cleveland other two losses came to Knoxville West and McCallie, while East Ham's only blemishes came against Ooltewah and Rhea County -- both of whom were eliminated last week.

South Pittsburg and Hixson will also host state quarterfinal matchups this week, while Silverdale, Marion County and Notre Dame will all travel. The Seahawks and Warriors will be tested by undefeated teams in Knoxville Grace (11-0) and Trousdale County (11-0).

Hixson is making its first-ever state quarterfinal appearance thanks to a grind-it-out offense and a physical defense. The Wildcats (8-3), who boast two 1,000-yard rushers in Kedrick Bradley and Isaiah Robinson, have allowed just twelve points in two playoff wins, but will be tested by Knox Catholic's up-tempo spread attack.

"We've tried to sell them on (being physical) is how you win playoff games," said head coach Jason Fitzgerald, who made a few quarterfinal trips at his previous coaching stop in Rhea County. "It was supposed to rain last week and it's supposed to rain this week, that's not great weather for offenses.

"This time of year you have to play good defense and be able to run the football to survive in the playoffs, and so far we've been able to do just that."

In Georgia, Ringgold secured its first-ever playoff win in its first-ever home postseason game by beating North Hall 55-54 last week in a wild shootout. Thanks to Cedar Grove's upset of top-seeded Elbert County, the Tigers will get to host a second round game.

Calhoun is also at home in round two in the Class AA bracket, while Gilmer, Trion and Christian Heritage will all travel in the round of 16.

All three local teams in North Carolina advanced through the first round of the NCHSAA Class 1A bracket. Hayesville and Andrews now must square off in round two, while Murphy hosts Allegheny.
