1 dead in plane crash at Nashville International Airport

Posted: Updated:

Federal investigators continue to examine the wreckage of a small plane that crashed Tuesday morning at Nashville International Airport, killing one person.

The identity of the person killed has not been released.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority says the crash involving a private Cessna-172 single-engine plane happened on Runway 2 Center.

A spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board said investigators believe the plane crashed shortly after 3 a.m. and then caught fire.

However, the wreckage was not discovered by a taxiing plane until several hours later.

"It's not something we see very often," said NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson.

MNAA emergency personnel, Metro Police, Metro Fire and Metro OEM responded to the scene of the crash about 9 a.m.

Runway 2 Center remains closed as the FAA and NTSB investigate, but the MNAA says the three other runways are open and operational. They say there are no flight delays at this time.

It is not yet clear what caused the crash or even whether the plane was taking off or landing when it lost control.

The plane was registered to a flying club in Canada.
