Experts: Most common 'date rape drug' is not what you think

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - When you think of a "date rape drug," what is the first thing that comes to mind?  A pill?  Something someone slips into a drink?

According to experts, the most common "date rape drug" is something many people consume on a regular basis.

"The most common date rape drug is alcohol," said Anna Whalley, Shelby County Rape Crisis Center. "It's the most commonly available. It's easy to get and it's easy to use."

Anna Whalley works with sexual abuse victims at the Shelby County Rape Crisis center. She says having too much to drink can put a bullseye on your back for predators looking to take advantage of someone. They can be strangers, but are often acquaintances.

"People don't make the best decisions when they're drinking, so sometimes a predator may be out in that area looking for someone that they can take advantage of," said Whalley.

Kimberly Bell does not drink, but she works around alcohol at a bar downtown.

"It's pretty normal. I think men buy women drinks all the time," she said.

Experts advise people to not drink excessively, to go out in groups, and always leave with the people you went out with.

While other 'date rape drugs' are out there, alcohol causes people to let their guard down, opening them up to dangerous and risky situations that do not have to include a pill.

"You buy them one more drink or have another drink, have another drink, and you get them to the point where they are incapacitated. Then they'll do things they just normally would not do," said Dr. Mark Castellaw, Baptist Medical Group.
