Fisk launches investigation of women's basketball team

Posted: Updated:

Fisk University has launched an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct within the women's basketball program.

The school said the allegations involved alcohol use and there is also an investigation involving interim head coach Tony Thompson over allegations of misconduct.

Stacey Garrett, the university's attorney, said the investigation began after the school received an anonymous email.

"The safety of its students is Fisk's top priority. As a result, the University has begun a thorough investigation of the content and credibility of the allegations in this anonymous complaint," said Garrett in a prepared statement. "If the investigation discovers any inappropriate conduct, Fisk will deal with the conduct in a manner that protects its students' safety and privacy. Further, because this allegation involves the privacy of our students and may involve personnel issues which are also confidential, the University will not have any other comment at this time."

The school canceled its season opener Sunday against Lindenwood University-Belleville (IL). University officials told The Tennessean the cancellation was not related with the investigation.

The school is scheduled to play at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, TN, on Thursday.
