Florida State - Ho hum - just another win in 2013 for the powerhouse Seminoles.
Quarterback Jameis Winston had a good performance, going 16-of-26 for 292 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. With the Seminoles (7-0, 5-0 ACC) scoring 35 points in the first quarter alone, the team sat their starters at halftime on the way to a rout of lowly North Carolina State (3-4, 0-4 ACC) 49-17.
A stellar win, the starters get some rest before another big conference game (see our game of the week below), the Seminoles broke a four game losing streak against NC State and it was Bobby Bowden Day? Dadgum, it was a fine Saturday for football in Tallahassee. NEXT UP: vs. No. 7 Miami on Nov. 2.
Northern Illinois – Undefeated NIU (8-0, 4-0 MAC) continues its winning regular season ways in 2013.
The No. 18 Huskies soundly beat conference opponent Eastern Michigan 59-20 on Saturday, totaling 658 yards of total offense with four different players throwing touchdown passes and no interceptions.
Huskies quarterback Jordan Lynch is also having a stellar season: through eight games, 138-of-225 for 1,488 yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions. NEXT UP: at Massachusetts on Nov. 2.
Other Week 9 winners: The No. 3 Oregon Ducks defeated No. 12 UCLA 42-14; Penn State lost to No. 4 Ohio State 63-14; No. 9 Clemson defeated a scrappy Maryland team 40-27; No. 8 Baylor beat Kansas 59-14 as their high scoring continues; No. 23 Central Florida defeated UConn 62-17; Wake Forest tried to hang around, but lost to No. 7 Miami 24-21; No. 20 Louisville beat South Florida 34-3 to rebound from last week's loss; Iowa State was defeated by No. 19 Oklahoma State 58-27; No. 15 Oklahoma upset No. 10 Texas Tech 38-30; No. 6 Stanford beat No. 25 Oregon State 20-12; No. 17 Fresno State defeated San Diego State 35-28.
Week 9 losers
Virginia Tech - Both quarterbacks for the Hokies and the Blue Devils had terrible days – with eight interceptions between them – but it was Duke's defense that was truly the winner.
Aside from holding No. 14 Virginia Tech (6-2, 3-1 ACC) to 10 points, Duke (6-2, 2-2 ACC) was the first team since 2000 to win a game with at least four interceptions and a completion percentage below 30 percent, according to ESPN Stats and Information. NEXT UP: at Boston College on Nov. 2.
UCLA – The Bruins (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) made the first big move of the game, taking advantage of a rare Oregon turnover and scoring on their first possession of the game.
A score of 14-14 at halftime made it seem like this Pac-12 matchup would be a close, high-scoring affair between two Heisman-hopeful quarterbacks – Oregon's Marcus Mariota and UCLA's Brett Hundley – but that wasn't the case. The mighty Oregon Ducks (I love Mighty Ducks references) pulled away in the second half, UCLA went scoreless for the last 30 minutes of play and take their second conference loss by a score of 42-14.
As far as Hundley's Heisman stock – being held to 64 yards, two touchdowns and an interception is not the way to get invited to New York in December. It's just not. NEXT UP: vs. Colorado on Nov. 2.
Other Week 9 losers: No 10 Texas Tech lost to No. 15 Oklahoma 38-30; No. 24 Nebraska lost to unranked Minnesota 34-23; No. 6 Stanford beat No. 25 Oregon State 20-12.
Week 10 game of the week: No. 7 Miami at No. 2 Florida State, 8 p.m. on ABC – For the second time in three weeks, Florida State must power through another high-ranked, undefeated conference opponent.
Lest we forget: A friendly reminder of what conference Northern Illinois is in – The Huskies are in the Mid-American football conference, and are currently battling 8-1 Ball State for first place in the MAC West division. The Ball State Cardinals visit Northern Illinois on Nov. 13 in a primetime game on ESPN 2.
The Huskies are currently the only MAC football team ranked in the AP Top 25 in 2013. After being defeated by Florida State in last year's Discover Orange Bowl last season, the Huskies may be attempting to reverse last year's fate.
