Bulger's Beat: Local family impresses as touring Annie Moses Band

Posted: Updated:

A Brentwood family band is taking its high-energy Americana music on the road, and you don't want to miss their act.

They are Bill, Annie, Alex, Benjamin, Camille, Gretchen and Jeremiah Wolaver, but you might know them better as the Annie Moses Band.

The group includes father Bill on the keyboards, and six siblings on everything else. The inspiration came from mom during practice sessions many years ago.

A family band was never part of the plan, but mom and dad just wanted their kids to have a love for music early in life.

"It's a powerful thing when your mother looks you in the eye and says, 'You are capable of something great, and I'm here to make sure that happens,'" said band member Annie Dupree.

Each of the kids had an instrument in his or her hands by the age of 4.

"It was a cacophony of a lot of music. Everyone in the room, practicing and various sounds," Dupree said.

Julliard in New York and Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music turned the cacophony into a chorus.

The family bus is now on the road for 100 shows a year.

"I think the goal of every artist is to share your music with as many people as possible in one way, while doing what you love," said band member Alex Wolaver.

It's high energy harmony, melody and personality blended nimbly, just like a good family.

"I think what people see is very authentic, and I think people feel that instinctively when they hear our music," Dupree said.

The family calls itself the Annie Moses Band as a tribute to their great grandmother. Her love of music inspired the following generations to keep on playing.

And they will do just that on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the First Baptist Church in Hendersonville at 6 p.m.
