Tips to protect pipes

Posted: Updated:

When the mercury dips, you have to protect your pipes.

"Remember to detach your hose pipes from the hose bib around the house," said Brad Brown with Hiller Plumbing, Heating & Cooling. "Probably the number one cause of a burst pipe under a house is leaving the hose bib attached."

Brown suggests to make sure your outdoor hose or faucet is set up to allow water to drain and prevent freezing.

However, this won't work if the hose is attached.

Homeowners should also close the vents along the crawlspace to keep drafts from getting through.

When it's really cold outside, it's a good idea to open your cabinet doors below your sinks and let the water drip just to keep it moving through the night.
