A popular kind of juvenile prank ended with a neighbor allegedly opening fire, and police say it's no laughing matter.

A group of teenagers set out to throw toilet paper on the home of a Franklin County principal, but what happened next has another man facing serious charges.

"We work shootings all the time, but something over a little mischief like this is a little ridiculous, I would say," said Franklin County Sheriff's Investigator Brian Brewer.

Franklin County deputies arrested Dale Farris early Sunday morning. According to them, Farris fired his shotgun several times at teens who tried to run through a field across from his home after pranking their principal.

Fragments hit one of the teens in at least six different spots.

Reba Sue Evans lives down the street and didn't hear the shots, but knows the neighbor and said she can't believe he would've done it on purpose.

"He was probably just trying to scare the kids. Dale's not going to hurt anybody. Not try to kill somebody or something like that," she said.

Still, deputies charged Farris with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, as the harmless prank ended in a dangerous way.

"You know, it's a prank, guys. It's nothing that serious, especially to pull a gun on somebody and actually shoot at them," Brewer said.

A man at Farris' home said "no comment" through the closed front door Tuesday afternoon when asked about this story.

Farris' attorney did not return a phone call for comment, either.

Farris is due to appear in court to answer the charges in December.

And the teen hit by the shotgun shell fragments is expected to recover.
