Boot camp workout held to benefit high schooler diagnosed with cancer

Some residents with big hearts got those big hearts pumping Saturday.

Dozens turned out for a strenuous boot camp workout session in Murfreesboro with all the money going toward a high school baseball pitcher fighting cancer.

There's no slacking under the watchful eyes of Harlan and Julie Wilcoxson of Transformations 4 Life. Pushing, jumping, lifting and sprinting - those in the workout were doing so much more than just burning calories.

"This is what we know, exercise," said Julie Wilcoxson. "That's what we do."

Sweating it out at Murfreesboro's Third Baptist Church, the session was a fundraiser for Oakland High senior Devin Cairo. A baseball pitcher and beloved classmate, last month Cairo was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma.

"It was hard to hear it because it was hard to believe it," said friend Callie Stout. "It was so out of the blue."

"We trained the Oakland baseball team for speed and agility for a few months," said Harlan Wilcoxson. "Devin was one of the ball players. Hard worker. Great kid."

"When our kids came home and told us, it just hit close to home," added Julie Wilcoxson. "As a parent, I can't imagine what his family is going through."

At home now recovering from chemotherapy, Devin said it's amazing to have people come out and support him, even some he doesn't know. Letters of support from his friends now cover his walls. Alongside them is one unsigned jersey set aside for the day he returns to baseball.

"He's ready to get back to baseball, so anything we can do to help, we're willing to do it," said Julie Wilcoxson. "I guess Devin's pretty shocked that people have come together to rally around him. He considers himself an average kid, but he's special. He's dealing with it."

"He's strong to have to go through all this, and there's not a doubt in my mind he'll get through this," added Stout. "He's such an uplifting, great person. He deserves all this. He really does."

More than $600 was raised for Devin as part of Saturday's boot camp workout.
