Frost advisory issued for Sunday morning in Middle Tennessee
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory in effect Sunday morning in Middle Tennessee for the first time this season.
The advisory is set for 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday.
Despite the advisory, 4WARN Meteorologist Dan Thomas said very little frost is expected to form.
"It's the first risk of the season, but it's only marginal. That means that the most at risk will be the deepest valleys and the traditionally coldest spots," Thomas said.
It's typical that Middle Tennessee gets its first frost threat in mid- to late-October, and Nashville's average first freeze - in other words, the average first time the air temperature at Nashville International Airport drops below 32 degrees - is October 28.
Because objects like plant leaves and surfaces off the ground cool more than the surrounding air, it is possible for frost to form on those objects while the air temperature stays above 32 degrees.
Thomas said people who are very worried about their plants might want to bring in the potted ones. Still, any damage that occurs to those left unprotected will be slight, because it's not expected to be a hard or killing frost anywhere.
There's no concern with pipes freezing, because the air temperature will remain above freezing throughout Middle Tennessee.
"Pets will survive the night outdoors, too, but they will be much more comfy at the foot of their owners' beds, so it's advised all pet owners bring them in for the night," Thomas said.
