PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A two-month-long drill has posed unique challenges for members of the Phoenix Fire Department's technical rescue team.

They've been training for eight weeks at a City of Phoenix water treatment plant at Deer Valley and Cave Creek roads.

Technicians were practicing techniques on how to safely rescue a worker trapped underground in a concrete vault.

Two man teams were sent underground on a hoist while monitoring for poisonous gases and lack of oxygen.

Each person was on a remote air supply and communication line. A backup team was in place.

Fire authorities said this type of rescue is one of the most difficult of its kind.
