FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Findlay murder case is making its way to a big screen.

A local filmmaker is shining a new light on the brutal murder of Vera Jo Reigle, a young Findlay mother with a mental disability who was killed two years ago.

The 24-year-old was stabbed to death by 21-year-old Daniel Bixler and his teenage girlfriend, who were later convicted of murder.

"Vera was absolutely innocent," said David Miles, who is making the documentary, ‘Good Night, Sugar Babe.' "They couldn't have picked a more innocent victim, and that's what keeps driving this, because people just want her to get justice."

Miles has dedicated years to figuring out fact from fiction in the case. He is turning his interviews with family, friends and even Reigle's murderers into a documentary.

"They tortured her," said Jamie Bracy, a family friend. "I keep thinking, ‘I have a Down Syndrome daughter.' If I wasn't here and that happened to her, I wouldn't want people to give up on her."

Bracy proudly wears her ‘Voices for Vera' sweatshirt, for a group she and her daughter started. Bracy and other family members believe Reigle was beaten regularly and held against her will by her boyfriend's family while living in their home.

"It didn't take them long to even admit some of the cruel things they've done to her," Bracy said of the Brooks family, who Reigle lived with. "They admitted to beating her with a belt with a padlock on it, and the belt was lying right there on the computer stand. They never even moved it."

Five members of the Brooks family admitted to lying to detectives investigating her murder. Many of them speak out for the first time in Miles' documentary, which is showing Friday at a Lima film festival.

"As a society, this is something we must take more seriously than what has been done so far, and that's, I think, the justice people are looking for," Miles said.
