NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Jimmy Fallon is a late-night fixture here on Channel 4, but he spent the day Tuesday in Nashville - and dropped by our studios - to have some fun and talk about getting ready for his new role as host of The Tonight Show.
Fallon becomes the new host of Tonight in February 2014 and said he never thought he'd see Johnny Carson retire, much less see himself filling Carson's shoes and those of longtime host Jay Leno.
We talked about his early comedy gigs, some of them here in Nashville.
"I had a Troll doll - those little dolls with the hair - and I did different celebrities auditioning for commercials for these Troll dolls. I'd do Bill Cosby, and it would be like, 'You know, the thing about the doll! With the hair sticking up, and the face is smiling with the jewel in the belly button.' I did the Troll act at Zanies in Nashville. This got me to where I am," Fallon said.
Fallon said fans can expect a similar brand of comedy when he moves to 10:30 p.m.
"I think it will be the same, only nicer sofas," he joked.
Fallon's visit to Music City wasn't complete without a meeting with Mayor Karl Dean, and even some hints of taking The Tonight Show on the road to Nashville one day.
He even got some Snowbird goodies to take home to his baby daughter.
But the true surprise was a visit by his friend and country music star Brad Paisley. Fallon is famous for his love of guitars, so we didn't want to leave him empty-handed. Our friends at Gibson Guitar presented him with a Les Paul self-tuning model.
"This is both music, and geek, combined!" Fallon said.
