Tullahoma man finds graveyard while doing yard work

TULLAHOMA, TN (WSMV) -

A Tullahoma man was doing yard work when he discovered graves.

Ricky Green was mowing his property on Emmett Stone Lane when he noticed the ground had settled.

A little digging unearthed a well cap and then a wooden coffin. Now it's believed there may be as 20 graves there all neatly spaced.

Green has marked the sites and is trying to learn more about the cemetery.

A historian has ruled out Civil War soldiers or slaves due to the history of the area.

"The reasonable deduction is to say that this was a family cemetery or a community cemetery," said historian Michael Bradley.

Green has owned the property for four years and says he didn't notice anything unusual prior to this wet summer, which probably caused the settling.

He says he hopes to continue researching and to learn the true history of the graveyard.
