UPDATE: Crews respond to warehouse fire in Whitfield County

Posted: Updated:

Emergency crews spent several hours Tuesday morning on the scene of a structure fire in Whitfield County.

Dispatch confirms they responded to a structure fire at a warehouse on the 2200 block of Cleveland Highway just outside the Dalton city limits.

The fire started on the second floor of the building around 7 a.m.

Crews from Whitfield County and Dalton responded to the scene. Firefighters had to knock out windows and cut a hole in the roof for ventilation.

"They knocked some windows out to get a chimney effect going to get some of that smoke and heat out," said Whitfield County Fire Chief Carl Collins. "It contained the smoke and the heat which made it really hard to fight fire in there. The boys get so... you get overheated really quick."

Building owner Drennon Crutchfield said there were multiple tenants in his fully-rented building, including a cabinet shop where the fire started.

"I was at home. I live about nine miles north of here and got a call at 7, and you get upset when you hear your building is on fire. And this is what you see, you know?" said building owner Drennon Crutchfield.

Crutchfield estimated the building is at least 100 years old.

There were no injuries.

Two right lanes of Cleveland Highway were closed for several hours as emergency vehicles worked the scene.
